Ceanothus 'El Dorado'

This plant was discovered in 1996 at Yoder Toddington (Farplants Sales Ltd , a Ceanothus grower at Littlehampton, England) as a sport in a crop of Ceanothus 'Zanzibar'.

Neil Robertson (Marketing Manager) of Farplants Sales Ltd said: "We decided to bulk it up as It's a better nurserymans plant than Ceanothus 'Zanzibar' and It looks better in late winter-early spring than 'Zanzibar'.

There is less yellow in the leaf so less tendency to get affected by cold. We also only had a 2 yr exclusive on 'Zanzibar'.

The flower colour is mid blue, slightly less bright than 'Zanzibar' and the flower heads are smaller and roundish (3cm long x 1.5cm wide) on somewhat extended stems. The habit is upright with stiff laterals growing out at 45 degrees, much like C. 'Yankee Point' and C. 'Skylark'.

This is in contrast to 'Zanzibar' who's stems arch over in a lax habit (like the species C. thyrsiflorens it came from).

Royalties from 'El Dorado' will go to the Specialist Plant Unit at Pershore College to fund further development. There is an application for EU Plant Variety Rights.
